DoNotPay alternative: breadth versus depth
DoNotPay does a very large number of unrelated things in fifty states. We do one process in one state. For a court filing, that difference matters more than it sounds.
Competitor pricing read from their own published pages on 2026-10-10. Prices change; check theirs before deciding.
Two genuinely different products
DoNotPay is a broad consumer-automation app: parking tickets, subscription cancellations, refunds, free trials, chargebacks, and small claims among many other tasks, across all fifty states. The appeal is obvious — one subscription, dozens of annoyances handled.
We do California small claims, and nothing else. No other state, no other case type, no unrelated consumer tasks.
Why single-state depth matters for a court filing
Small claims procedure is not a national thing with local variations. It is fifty separate systems:
- Limits differ. California is under $12,500 for an individual and under $6,250 for an entity. Other states are wildly different.
- Deadlines differ. California gives four years on a written contract and two on an oral one, under specific Code of Civil Procedure sections.
- Forms differ. California uses SC-100, SC-104, SC-120, EJ-130 — Judicial Council forms that exist nowhere else.
- Representation rules differ. California bars attorneys from the hearing. Many states do not.
- Courts differ. California has 58 county Superior Courts, each with its own website, local practice and filing arrangements.
A general tool has to abstract over all of that. Fifty-state content ends up generic, and generic is exactly what fails at a clerk's window.

When DoNotPay is the better buy
- You are not in California. We genuinely cannot help you.
- You want the other things. If a single subscription that also fights parking tickets and cancels subscriptions is what you want, that is a real product and we do not compete with it.
- Your problem is not a court filing. For a chargeback or a refund, going to court is usually the wrong tool anyway — and we say so throughout this site.
When we are
- You are filing in a California court and need the right county, the right form, the right deadline and the right proof of service.
- You want to see the authority. Every legal claim on this site carries its code section so you can check it.
- You want to start free. No subscription required to write and download a letter.
- You file repeatedly. $19 a month covers unlimited California cases.

We have not listed DoNotPay's prices here because their plans and feature set change, and we would rather compare on scope than publish a figure that may be stale by the time you read it. Look at their site for the current position.
Common questions
Can DoNotPay file a small claims case for me?
It offers small claims assistance among many other consumer tasks across all fifty states. Whether that is sufficient depends on your state and how much state-specific procedure your case needs. For a California filing, you will need the right county court out of 58, the correct Judicial Council form, and valid service of process with proof filed before the hearing.
Why does single-state coverage matter?
Because small claims is fifty separate systems, not one with variations. Limits, filing deadlines, forms, service rules and whether lawyers may appear all differ by state. Content written to cover all fifty has to stay general, and general guidance is what gets paperwork rejected at the counter.
Start with a demand letter
Most California small claims cases settle before anyone sees a courtroom. The letter is free to write, and you can have us print and certified-mail it for $29.
No account needed to start. We are not a law firm and cannot give legal advice.
